The Paper Scissors

With their brand new single Howl just added to high rotation on triple J (the latest installment in a long line of TPS tracks to have been so) Sydney’s The Paper Scissors (TPS) have just announced the release of their “Howl EP” and accompanying national tour dates.

Featuring two brand new tracks and 3 remixes of the title track (by Spod, Sydney glitch hopper Cleptoclectics and former Gerling front man The E.L.F respectively) the “Howl EP” is available June 23rd through itunes and in stores July 12th.

Who are The Paper Scissors?

Off the back of their hugely successful single We Don’t Walk, The Paper Scissors released their debut album ‘Less Talk More Paper Scissors’ (LTMPS ) in mid 2007 and the national response was staggering. The Sydney Morning Herald called first single Yamanote Line “The Greatest song ever written. Truly”, Sydney Magazine made it their album of the month, FBI, RRR, and PBS Fm all made it their ‘album of the week’ whilst We Don’t Walk and Yamanote Line both received a huge national pasting via high rotation on Triple J. We Don’t Walk was featured in CH 9‘s ‘Underbelly’ and amongst such luminaries as Nick Cave and The Easybeats, quickly became the second highest selling song off the soundtrack. In short, TPS became hard to avoid.

The earlier part of 2008 saw the band sell out a national tour with bluejuice, be bestowed with the honour of being asked to program Rage and somehow, fit it all in between festival appearances at Parklife, The Playground Weekender and many more festivals and club shows to boot. Late 2008 saw the band take some down time whilst main man Jai Pyne did some travelling and writing in New York. They then regrouped to write and demo new tracks in Byron Bay, 2 of which appear on the “Howl EP”, the rest of which will surface on their next album proper, to be released early 2010.

The “Howl EP”

The tracks that appear on the “Howl EP” track are the title track, a goodbye-to-love anthem and 'Soldier', a rock assault/picture of frustration and alienation. Without losing their sense of fun, the new songs bathe TPS in a slightly different light, shedding irony and flippancy upon the inherent presence and vivacity that the band are renowned for delivering.

Aided by the production of Jai Pyne and working for the first time with drummer Ivan Lisyak, the new sound still retains the true TPS style, diverse (with 25 piece choir, afro rhythms, freak outs and anthemic singalongs) but specifically incorporating the frenetic edge loved and witnessed at TPS live shows.

A sweaty catharsis of energy and vitality you can catch for yourself at:
